Time to shill more manga. I feel like a bit of a jerk for making this post because as of now Witches is impossible to get legally in the USA. My only argument is that Witches is a comic that really really should make it's way here.

Witches is an anthology of stories about well... witches. Each arc is a stand-alone story about a different witch in a different time and culture. This is from the first story "Spindle".
We start off with an unknown nomadic tribe. The women of the tribe have a tradition of weaving patterns. One day a girl in the tribe weaves something strange...
Read right to left, 2 pages of a 60 page chapter and 13 pages of a 61 page chapter

Inside the capital we meet Nicola who is more of our conventional definition of a witch.
When she was a child she fell in love with a man in the Capital and he rejected her. Since then she studied the art of witchcraft before coming back years later. She meets an old fortune teller who called her a "small witch" as a child.

She then starts resurrecting the ancient spirits that rest in the old city to create an army for herself. She kidnaps her spurned lover's family, planning to use them as a sacrifice to awaken the ghost of Constantine lying underneath the capital.

But then, the small witch meets the big witch.

Well if you want Witches then... you'd have to find it illegally unfortunately. However the mangaka Daisuke Igarashi has another series published by Viz called "Children of the Sea", I can best describe it as Witches meets Miyazaki's Ponyo. It's pretty good and has the same half-whimsical, half-horrific visual imagery.
Buy it so more of Igarashi's stuff comes over!
